1.0EHESO data gathering and storing

1.4Data Import

Our guidance provides the best way to export EHESO microdata for importing into two widely used statistical software packages: STATA and SPSS. Both statistical software packages offer powerful tools for handling and analysing large datasets.

We suggest downloading the data as follows:

1. Exporting all variables for all years and countries

To export the complete dataset:

  • Click the yellow button labelled ‘Export All Variables for All Years and All Countries’.
  • In the drop-down menu, select ‘Export All Variables’.
  • A display and export settings box appears. Select ‘variable names’ as headers, as they are shorter and standardised.
  • Choose the export format from the right-hand drop-down menu—select 'Machine Ready (STATA)' or ‘Machine Ready (SPSS)’
  • Click ‘Export’ (yellow button on the left) to download the .csv file.
2. Exporting a selection of variables

To export specific variables instead of the entire dataset:

  • Select the variables by flagging the corresponding labels. You may also select entire sections (e.g. Basic Institutional Descriptors or Geographic Information).
  • To export selected variables for all years and countries:
    • Click the yellow button ‘Export All Years and Countries’.
    • In the drop-down menu, select ‘Export Selected Variables’.
    • In the display settings box, ensure ‘variable names’ is checked.
    • Choose the export format as 'Machine Ready (STATA)' or ‘Machine Ready (SPSS)’.
    • Click ‘Export’ (yellow button on the left) to download the .csv file.
3. Filtering by country and/or year

To filter data before exporting:

  • Click the green button ‘Select and continue’.
  • On the next page:
    • Choose years under ‘Select years’ (top left).
    • Choose countries under ‘Select countries’ (top right).
    • Click ‘Search HEIs’ to retrieve the filtered data.
  • Once the data appears, adjust settings before exporting:
    • Open ‘Settings’, select ‘variable names’ as headers, and choose 'Machine Ready (STATA)' or ‘Machine Ready (SPSS)’ as the export format. Click ‘Apply’ (yellow button).
    • Click ‘Export data’, select ‘Export visible data’ from the drop-down menu, and wait for the .csv file to download.

The data is now ready for further processing.
