MLE on Open Science: Altmetrics and Rewards
The European Union's Mutual Learning Exercise (MLEs) on Open Science was a collaborative initiative under the Horizon 2020 Policy Support Facility (PSF). This exercise brought together EU Member States and Associated Countries to exchange experiences, identify best practices, and develop strategies for implementing Open Science policies. The focus is on two key areas: altmetrics and incentives for researchers. Altmetrics refers to alternative metrics that assess research impact beyond traditional citations. The initiative aimed to foster systemic changes in science governance across Europe by addressing the challenges of implementing Open Science, sharing experiences from 13 participating countries, and proposing a National Roadmap for transitioning to supportive research governance.
Results and key conclusions are available for download on the Policy Support Facility website of DG Research & Innovation. The reports emphasise the importance of redefining impact metrics to prioritise quality over quantity in research outputs and identifies effective strategies to encourage researchers' engagement in Open Science activities through appropriate rewards and recognition systems.
