Social justice and equality of opportunity are central to the Welsh Government’s policy goals. The Welsh Government has identified reducing poverty as a priority and has set out a specific child poverty strategy. By addressing causes of poverty, the intention is also to avoid consequences such as poorer outcomes in education, health and individual behaviours, and reduced social cohesion.
The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 came into force in April 2016. It requires public bodies to operate according to sustainable development principles in order to safeguard the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of future generations. One of its well-being goals is ‘a more equal Wales, which enables people to fulfil their potential no matter what their background or circumstances (including their socio economic background and circumstances)’.
