Information providers / counselling structures
In Greece, several public authorities and civil society organisations provide information to young people about democratic rights and democratic values. While there is no single dedicated national contact point for youth political information, existing structures include:
-
Municipal Youth Councils and Municipal Youth Services, which often organise local sessions and provide materials on democratic engagement as part of their outreach and youth-information role.
-
Non-governmental organisations such as Youth Action – Empowering Young People in Greece, which operate at local and national levels and organise events, workshops and educational discussions that encourage youth participation, leadership and civic engagement.
-
Civil society groups such as HYP – Human Rights Education Programme that aim to develop young people’s understanding of human rights and democratic values through activism, debate and information campaigns.
These organisations provide information and counselling predominantly online via dedicated websites or social media, or through in-person activities and events where young people can learn about their democratic rights and engage in civic discourse.
Youth-targeted information campaigns about democratic rights and democratic values
Several youth-targeted initiatives in Greece have aimed to raise awareness about democratic rights and values:
-
Youth Action for Democracy is a recent project (February 2024–February 2025) funded by the European Union that ran educational activities and awareness campaigns across four municipalities (Thessaloniki, Thermi, Komotini and Larissa). It focused on EU values, civic engagement and democratic rights, including training seminars, citizen dialogues and social-media campaigns that reached millions of young people. This project culminated in local youth groups presenting policy proposals to public authorities.
-
Greek youth organisations (including those operating through Erasmus+ subsidies) have also implemented campaigns such as Youth Votes for Europe, which provided information and education aimed at boosting electoral participation among young people.
These campaigns often target young people aged 18–30, with tailored messaging and activities delivered both in person and online to inform participants about their rights and the importance of democratic participation.
Promoting the intercultural dialogue among young people
Intercultural dialogue projects promote understanding and respect among youth from different cultural backgrounds. Although Greece has no single national flagship programme solely dedicated to intercultural dialogue, relevant activities include:
-
European Youth Policy Dialogues (#WeUTalk), supported by the European Commission and hosted at national levels, which bring together young people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds to discuss policy issues affecting them. These dialogues, first launched during the European Year of Youth 2022, are now continuing yearly and help facilitate intercultural exchange and democratic engagement.
These kinds of intercultural dialogue activities support inclusion and mutual understanding, particularly for young people from multicultural or migrant backgrounds.
Promoting transparent and youth-tailored public communication
There is no comprehensive national framework specifically regulating transparent and youth-tailored political communication. Nonetheless:
-
Public institutions (including local authorities and ministries) communicate information on youth rights and democratic processes through accessible channels such as official websites, social media pages and public consultations.
-
Participation in European Youth Policy Dialogues has become a tool for enhancing transparent communication between young people and policymakers, enabling youth voices to be heard within decision-making forums and contributing to clearer communication of European values.
There are no standardised national-level training programmes for policymakers specifically on youth-tailored communication, but some engagement initiatives inherently support the development of better communication practices through participatory events, workshops and forums.
