Ongoing debates

In June 2025, the Austrian Minister for Education introduced the 'Freiraum Schule' initiative, which was designed to reduce bureaucracy in education and grant schools greater autonomy. Intercultural learning (Interkulturelle Bildung) has been a fundamental teaching principle since 1992, with binding guidelines issued in 2017. These are now being repealed in favour of a more flexible, school-level approach. The reform aims to enable educators to adapt intercultural education to the specific needs of their students, thereby encouraging innovation and creative pedagogy, as well as fostering more responsive school environments that reflect Austria’s cultural and social diversity. As the reform is still ongoing, no official document is yet available.
