On 1. Februar 2021, the responsibilities of the former Federal Ministry for Labour, Families and Youth have again been relocated to the Federal Chancellery.
As of January 2019, the youth (protection) laws were largely harmonised, but there are still 9 different laws, one for each Federal State.
The current debate is centered around the adequate consideration of the needs of young people during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly with regard to lockdown measures that take a toll on young people (e.g. opening of schools, universities, youth work spaces, and sports facilities; psychological support; curfews and reduction of open leisure activities; work and apprenticeship opportunities).
