Existence of a National Youth Strategy

Young people and their affairs are usually addressed within many different strategies and often they are included in a strategy involving all age groups. However, no national youth strategy exists in Iceland which takes a holistic approach to the subject of youth. The importance of a national strategy in this field has been iterated for example by the Office of the Ombudsman for Children in Iceland, who in an open letter in 2018 urged the importance of a clear strategy that takes into account youth affairs from a wider perspective, such as education, job marked participation and wellbeing.

In the government’s policy statement following the 2024 elections, it was agreed to include the development of a national youth strategy for Iceland in the government’s agenda. A steering group has now been established to initiate this work in consultation with young people and relevant stakeholders

Scope and contents

As a holistic youth strategy does not exist in Iceland, this does not apply.

Responsible authority for the implementation of the Youth Strategy

Should a youth strategy be authored and implemented in the future, the Ministry of Education and Children would be the responsible authority.

Revisions/updates

This does not apply.
