5. Participation
It's promising to note that an updated National Youth Strategy for the years 2023-2030 is currently in development and is anticipated to be published this year. This reflects a continued commitment to addressing the evolving needs and aspirations of the youth population. There is not a standalone strategy targeting youth participation in the country, although the topic is underpinned in the National Youth Strategy 2017-2022 (NYS) from Youth Board of Cyprus (YBC), as one of the eight thematic areas. It should be noted that an updated National Youth Strategy 2030 is under development and is anticipated to be finalised in 2024. This reflects a continued commitment to addressing the evolving needs and aspirations of the youth population.
Moreover, the number and structure of youth representation bodies in the country underlines that youth participation becomes gradually a priority. A highlight is the existence of legal provisions in Youth Board of Cyprus’s Law on youth consultation. However, there are still limited initiatives dedicated to learning to participate in the country. As the new strategy is set to be unveiled this year, there is an opportunity to address this gap and introduce specific measures to enhance youth engagement, education, and empowerment, thereby creating a more participatory and inclusive society for the youth in Cyprus.
