In Malta, young people have various opportunities to engage in societal and political life. They can participate through student councils, youth parliaments, youth local councils, and by joining political party structures. Youth representation is also ensured at the national level, with young people having a voice in bodies such as the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.
Since 2015, young people aged 16 and over have had the right to vote in local council elections. This right was eventually extended to include voting in National and European Parliament elections and referenda. Furthermore, Maltese legislation allows young people aged 16 and over not only to vote, but also to stand as candidates in local elections—including for the role of mayor. Young people are also eligible to become Members of Parliament.
