9. Youth and the World

Last update: 20 August 2025

In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), youth engagement in global issues such as sustainable development, climate change, and social inclusion is gradually increasing, but still requires stronger institutional support. Civil society organizations (CSOs) and international initiatives, such as the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), AIESEC, and projects supported by the EU and UNDP, play a key role in empowering young people to actively participate in global processes. Through programs such as the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), Young European Ambassadors (YEA), and green volunteer initiatives, young people in BiH contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.

However, formal education still insufficiently integrates topics related to global issues, while non-formal and informal forms of learning, supported through projects such as Eco-Schools and Eco-Education, show significant progress. This chapter provides an overview of policies, programs, and initiatives that enable young people in BiH to engage in global topics, with an emphasis on cross-sectoral cooperation between institutions, CSOs, and international partners, as well as current debates aimed at improving youth participation in the context of EU integration and regional cooperation.

The current situation in BiH shows that young people lack opportunities to learn about global problems and challenges through formal education, while opportunities through non-formal education remain very limited. The opportunities available to young people mostly relate to environmental protection, gender-based violence prevention, and sustainable development. Institutions such as the Council of Ministers of BiH and entity-level ministries are increasingly cooperating with CSOs to support youth engagement.
